History of Sevilla

Sevilla was established during the Iberian period and during that time, the city is known as “Hispalis”. The Iberians were eventually replaced by the Moors in the year 712. They named the city “Išbīliya” which is practically the same as Hispalis. The name “Sevilla” is also based on the city’s first name. The city was conquered by the Spaniards in 1248 under the leadership of King Fernando III of Castile. The city is also known as the chosen port of Christopher Columbus before he embarked for the New World in 1492.

The 15th century Cathedral is the symbol of the successful occupation of “conquistadores” as the structure used to be a mosque. It’s considered one of the largest gothic cathedrals in the world. The most popular among them is the 19th century Museum of Fine Arts. There are also parks in various parts of the city often enjoyed by families and tourists during the weekends.
