The country’s capital has an extensive past that its first inhabitants are pre-historic. The area was occupied by the Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and finally the city became part of Spain since it was conquered 1085 by Alfonso VI. Although numerous structures were put up before the Spain’s conquest of Madrid, it was only after the conquest that additional structures that still stand today were built.

 

Attractions in Madrid

The biggest attractions of Madrid were the architectural structures built before and after the conquest of Alfonso VI. The Cathedral de la Almudena used to be a mosque but was consecrated once it was conquered. Other interesting structures are found in other parts of the city and many features unique architectural designs such as baroque (in Paseo del Prado) and the cathedral has the combination of Gothic and neoclassical.
