History of Vitoria-Gasteiz
The second most important city of the Basque Country, in the north of Spain, Vitoria-Gasteiz was originally founded as the city of Victoriacum by the Visigoths. During the Middle Age period, the city was a defensive outpost which eventually grew into a city. One of the most significant historical episodes is the battle of Vitoria in 1813, where French troupes where defeated by the Duke of Wellington. Nowadays, the city as particularly developed its industrial sector which has been efficiently integrated in the urban landscape of the town, making this latter one of the best administrations in Europe.
Attractions of Vitoria-Gasteiz
In the town centre, the Independence monument is a commemoration of the Battle of Vitoria. The old town of Vitoria-Gasteiz, also known as Casco Viejo, is particularly well preserved with numerous monuments such as the Casa del Cordon, the Gothic Cathedral the archaeological museum and the tower of Dona Otxanda.
Going out in Vitoria-Gasteiz
A traditional habit in the province of Alava, where Vitoria-Gasteiz is, is the “txikiteo”. It can take place at lunchtime or in evening, when groups of friends will go from one bar to another to drink shots of wine, beer or cider which may well be accompanied by some tapas.
Festivals in Vitoria-Gasteiz
The city has two main musical events going on every year. One is the Jazz festival in July whereas the other is the Azkena Rock Festival, usually at the end of August. Another local tradition is El Dia de Blusa ( the blouse day) which occurs on the 25th July. Young people wear typical blouses and are grouped in small teams, bringing several entertainments in town.
