History of Salamanca

Salamanca is a city in the province of Castilla y Leon, between Madrid and Portugal. It is mostly known for hosting one of the most ancient Universities in Europe. The foundation of the city dates back in the second century BC and has a Celtic origin. As many other Spanish cities, Salamanca was subsequently dominated by Romans and Moorish, before returning to the Spanish crown. Nowadays, Salamanca has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to the importance of it cultural, historic and artistic legacy.

Attractions in Salamanca

One reason among others for people visiting Salamanca is also that of learning Spanish. The reputation of this town, indeed, is that of being the place where the most correct form of Spanish (with no dialect and accents) is spoken. As mentioned beforehand, the University of Salamanca is one of the oldest in Europe, dating to1218, and is located within an impressive renaissance building. Other important constructions are two Cathedrals and the Roman built bridge.

Going Out in Salamanca

As it is a town much populated by students, there is of course a lot to enjoy in the free time in Salamanca and the atmosphere is young and cheerful even though the tow is quite small. At any day of the week, you can find nice and busy tapas bars and clubs where people gather from day hours until late at night.
