History of Coruna
La Coruna is situated in the north western coast of Spain, in the autonomous region of Galicia. Coruna was the capital of Galicia from 1563 to 1982 before Santiago de Compostela. La Coruna, or A Coruna, as this town is called in galician, has a historical legacy from different people and cultures, including Roman, Normans and Vikings. Because of its position and importance of its harbour, the city has been a maritime trade centre from ancient Roman times. Today, Coruna has particularly developed a strong financial and tertiary sector.
Attractions in Coruna
One of the main attractions to visit in La Coruna is the oldest working lighthouse, known as the Tower of Hercules which has been nominated a UNESCO world heritage site. Moreover, the Acuarium Finisterrae is among the biggest aquariums in the whole of Spain hosting the most various interactive exhibitions on maritime themes.
Things to do in La Coruna
The promenade along the Avenida de la Marina offers an amazing view of the harbour of A Coruna and its “glass city”, which is constituted by the glass fronted buildings that face the harbour. The theatre Rosalia and the Coliseum, where bullfighting takes place, along with over 25 exposition centres are among the main cultural venues to check out.
Beaches
La Coruna has very popular beaches that are ideal spots for surfing. Praia del Orzan is very close to town whereas Mino and Praia As Catedrais are extremely beautiful beaches in nearby locations.
