History of Bilbao
The city of Bilbao was established in 1300. Don Diego Lopez de Haro V established the city in the area now called Old Bilbao. The city became the capital of Biscay in early 1600s and became one of the richest in Spain because of its role in the industrial revolution.
Attractions in Bilbao
Bilbao is well known for its modern art museum named Guggenheim Museum Bilbao. The eccentric structure coupled with unique art was opened in 1997. The St. James Cathedral is also an impressive church because of its Gothic architecture built during the 14th century. The Old Town of Bilbao is also recommended for tourists because of its well kept structures from the medieval period.
Going out in Bilbao
Tourists who visit Bilbao should be able to visit various towns outside the city and enjoy remarkable beaches. Santander and San Sebastian are two cities outside Vizcaya worth visiting because of their beach resorts.

Bilbao is not well known for its beaches but the towns near the city are highly accessible. Towns such as Sopalena, Plentzia and Mundaka are home to some beautiful beaches perfect for families as well as various water sport activities.
Weather in Bilbao
The weather in Bilbao is perfect for tourists. Extreme temperature is only experienced during August and only lasts a few days. Cold weather (snow and rain) usually happens from December to February. Like the extreme heat, snow only occurs a few times every year in Bilbao.
