History of Valencia

Valencia has one of the most storied histories in Spain. The city was named after the literal translation of “valor” which is a tribute to the Roman soldiers that stayed in the city in 140BC. Even during the Muslim occupation, the city is called Balansiya in Arabic. The city had been occupied by the Romans, Visigoths, Moors, Catalans and Aragonese. The Muslims and the Spaniards fiercely fought over the city until King James of Aragon successfully re-conquered the city in 1238.
