For the past decade, the Murcia-Javier airport experienced drastic increase of tourist arrivals. This was due to the increase of tourists' interest in the region. In 1995 less than 90,000 passengers went through the airport. After 14 years, more than 1.6 million passengers use the airport. The airport also saw an increased number of airlines operating here and most of them are low cost companies.
