History of Mallorca
The earliest settlers in Mallorca were from the Paleolithic period (6000BC) and the island has been through various rulers. The island was under Roman power as early as 123BC and then were under the Vandals and Byzantine Empire. Mallorca became part of Spain’s monarchy in the 12th century.

The airport was named after its location and it is located less than seven kilometers from the city center. It started out as a flatland during the 20s and now it’s considered one of the biggest and busiest airports in Spain because the area is a major tourist destination. More than 20 million passengers go through the airport every year and the busiest time of the year is during the summer season. Palma de Mallorca Airport was established during the 20s and it has already reached one million passengers a year since 1962. The airport has two runways and the 2nd runway was completed in 1974. Because of the airport’s importance to tourism, Palma de Mallorca is served by almost every major airline that operates in Europe. Air Berlin, Air Europa and Iberworld have made the airport its hub. Airlines often take tourists to and from mainland Spain, UK and Germany often with direct flights.
