City Breaks in Sevilla
Sevilla History
Sevilla is the capital of Andalusia in the south of Spain, and a living legacy of the most diverse historical influences which have built up its unique identity. Over time, this city has seen many civilizations passing on its soil. From the Roman aqueduct to the Islamic Moorish style of important historical buildings and the so called Mudéjar style of Christian churches and cathedrals, the landscape of the city reveals different historical layers. Seville's blossoming and economic development was especially strong in early modern times, when its strategic position made it a primary point of contact for trade connections with the Spanish Americas.
Sevilla Attractions
One of the main attractions of Seville is the Cathedral and the Giralda Tower. It is known to be the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and largest cathedral after St. Peter's in Rome and St. Paul's in London. The Giralda tower is the historic bell tower that is part of the cathedral, from which top you can see an amazing view of the entire city.
Things to do in Sevilla
Seville's tapas bars are a must-do when visiting the town as some says Seville is the place where the tapas culture started. To fully enjoy this typical Spanish custom, go for the “tapeo”, the evening tapas-hopping to try out different restaurant and bars instead of having a long meal in one single place.
Festivals in Sevilla
One of the main traditional events of Seville is the Semana Santa (Holy Week), during the festivities of Easter, with several processions going from the outskirts towards the Cathedral where the Via Crucis is held. Shortly after that, the Feria de Abril, between April and May, is a typical and folkloric celebration with traditional costumes, Sevillanas dance and lots of food hosted in the Casetas of town, the typical temporary locations built up for the event.
