Historic Tours of Santiago
History
Santiago was founded in the early 400s by Suebi and it later became a part of the kingdom of Visigoths in Spain. In the 700s it was raided by the Arabs but was later recaptured by the Visigoths. Saint James’ remains were found here although the Vatican does not want to commit to its authenticity. However the St. James’ pilgrimage began in Santiago de Compostela.
Attractions
The main attractions in Santiago de Compostela are religious establishments such as Santiago Cathedral which is a historic and a religious site. It is believed that the Cathedral also has the remains of St. James. Interesting attractions points are also Mercado de Abastros (a very attractive food market) or Praza do Obridorio which contains the Church of St. James. For beaches and a swim travel about 60 kilometers north then you’ll hit Coruna where you’ll get to find some nice beaches.
Going Out
In Santiago de Compostela you can enjoy eating out, go barhopping in Paraiso Perdido (they serve excellent caipirinhas and hot chocolate) or Momo - a bar decorated like a street, with traffic lights and crossroads.
Weather
Compared to other Spanish regions, Santiago de Compostela is cooler. The cool weather here is especially popular during summer when other regions are very hot.
