Madrid is the Capital of Spain and one of the top cities in the world. Known for its historical, industrial and cultural role in the European culture, the city is one of the most visited cities in Europe (nearly 7 million in 2006).

The city is home to some of the most impressive historical structures and museums in the world. A good example is Museo del Prado - a permanent home of some of the paintings made by Goya, Deigo Velazquez, Caravaggio and other renowned artists in the world.

Madrid Airport

The official name of Madrid's main airport is Madrid-Barajas Airport (MAD). The airport is one of the busiest airports in the world with more than 50 million passengers going through its four terminals. The airport was first used as an international airport in 1937.

During its initial years of operation the small airport were only used by 30,000 passengers. Its notable expansion started during the 70s when larger aircrafts were manufactured together with increase in tourism. The airport covers part of Madrid as well as Barajas and the city center of Madrid is less than 9miles away from the airport.

Because of its popularity and importance to passenger routes, the airport is also the hub of some of the biggest European airline companies such as Air Comet, easyJet, Iberia Airlines, Ryanair, Spanair, Vueling Airlines and Air Europa.
