History of Central Asturias

Asturias is an increasingly popular tourist destination located in the northern part of Spain. It’s considered an autonomous community composed of various towns and cities. The Central Asturias is the most popular compared to other regions in the community because of the impressive natural beauty, rural atmosphere while keeping with the modern conveniences offered in large cities. Three towns are very popular in Central Austrias: Aviles which is considered the community’s industrial city, Gijón which is a coastal town and Oviedo which is very popular for its uniquely natural setting.

Attractions in Central Asturias

The three major towns in Central Asturias have lots to offer to tourists. In Aviles, the Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury is a beautiful pre-Romanesque structure built during the 13th century. In Gijón, tourists can visit the Revillagigedo Palace which is an impressive Baroque church from the 18th century. Oviedo is the most impressive of them all when it comes to structures because of its numerous churches. Among them is the Cathedral of San Salvador which was also features pre-Romanesque architecture. Like the Church of St. Thomas of Canterbury, this was also built during the 13th century. All these three towns have impressive beaches that should not be missed by any tourist.

Festivals in Central Asturias

Festivals are never lacking in Central Asturias. Oviedo has numerous festivals celebrating the feast of various Saints, Feast of Ascension and the Three Wise Men. This trend is also the same in Gijón. On the other hand, Interceltic Festival of Avilés is an annual festival in Avilés dedicated to Celtic tradition and way of life. This festival is often celebrated every July.
